Patience – Mannequin Pussy

This album is a personal favorite. I actually only discovered this band because I know one of the band members’ mom, but I fell in love with them the moment I heard “Drunk II”, and I bought tickets to a completely different show just to see them open. This band’s guitar work is beautiful and trancelike; the riffs of the lead guitar fit so perfectly with the chords and the rhythm established by the other guitar player. The rhythms created by this band’s rhythm guitarist are excellent and original, especially paired with the energetic, exciting vocals on every song on the album, which work specifically to create an awesome groove. There are so many nice little touches on this album, from the barline-busting guitar riff on “Patience” to the great transitions between each song on the album. The lyrics are also great, conveying deeply personal messages about how to deal with oneself, the outside world, and trauma. A really satisfying song to me is “Fear/+/Desire”, which talks about abuse unflinchingly and specifically responds to the glamorization of domestic violence on the Crystals’ “He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss)” and Lana Del Rey’s “Ultraviolence”; the song starts with a soft rock instrumental that could be cool but then gives us that incredible stylistic guitar work we know they take pride in. “Cream” is also a highlight of the album with its Spanish yelling and 3-measure phrases. The harmonies in every track on this album are incredible and I can’t avoid loving the full range between deliberately grating sounds on “F.U.C.A.W.” and “Clams” and bright poppy chords on “Who We Are” and “In Love Again”. This is an album I can’t recommend enough; it’s just pure beauty.
